Biography

Born in South Shields, Tyne and Wear,[3] Turnbull is the twin brother of midfielder Stephen Turnbull.[4]

Club career

Turnbull was a member of the Hartlepool United youth system's successful Dallas Cup campaigns in 2004 and 2005. He began to establish himself in the reserve team over the next couple of years, whilst still with the youth team.[5] Turnbull joined Gateshead on loan in December 2005.[6]

He was given his first professional contract with Hartlepool in the summer of 2006.[2] He made his first, and only, appearance for Hartlepool's first team after he started in the 3–1 defeat of Rotherham United in the Football League Trophy on 17 October.[7] He joined Blyth Spartans on a one-month loan on 22 January 2007.[8] He was released by Hartlepool in May 2007.[9]

He was signed by Conference National club York City on 6 July 2007.[10] He missed the start of the 2007–08 due to a shoulder injury which he picked up in a pre-season friendly against Frickley Athletic on 25 July.[11] He rejoined Gateshead on a one-month loan in February 2008 and made his debut against Witton Albion.[12][13] He agreed a permanent contract with Gateshead in March and he was released by York.[14][15] He scored his first career goal on 1 April 2008 in Gateshead's 2–0 win over Prescot Cables at Valerie Park.[16]

International career

Turnbull was called into the England under-18 squad in September 2004.[17]

Style of play

He plays as a central midfielder and is comfortable playing with either foot.[8][17] He has been described as fiercely competitive and "is more than capable of getting forward to support the front men and chipping in with his fair share of goals".[17]
